Action Planning Days
No Name-Calling Week
This action planning day helps educators and youth plan events for No Name-Calling Week, an annual week of educational activities aimed at ending name-calling of all kinds and providing schools with the tools and inspiration to launch an on-going dialogue about ways to eliminate bullying in their communities. http://www.nonamecallingweek.org
This year No Name-Calling Week will occur during the week of January 22-26, 2007. Register at http://www.nonamecallingweek.org/cgi-bin/iowa/all/register/index.html.
The Day of Silence
This action planning day helps Gay-Straight Alliances and other groups of youth and educators organize an effective and meaningful Day of Silence in their schools. Participants share specific ideas about how to implement and gain support for the event in their schools and communities. The Day of Silence is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment—in effect, the silencing—experienced by LGBT students and their allies. http://www.dayofsilence.org
This year the Day of Silence will be observed nationally on April 18, 2007. The national office of GLSEN selected this date by conducting a poll of states across the country. We recognize that April 18 falls during a vacation week for many Massachusetts schools.
As an alternative, the Massachusetts Day of Silence will be held on
Wednesday, April 25.
